Get To Know Mike Alley:
Tell us about your faith journey.
I made a profession of faith at 13. But, I didn’t really have a saving faith until I was 17. I was out on a date (with Stacey) and we were talking about the fact that even though I had flown across the country many times since I was just a little guy, the last time I was on a plane I had the wave of fear that if the plane crashed, what would happen? As we spoke, I realized that I needed to know that my eternal future was locked in. We were headed to our bible study after the date and I just went into the sanctuary of the church and knelt down at the altar and asked the Lord to give me the faith to totally believe, no matter what I was faced with. A peace washed over me, and I have never felt that fear of dying again.
What’s your favorite room in your house and why?
Well, if you asked my wife, she would tell you that it must be the bedroom because of how much I like to sleep! It really is the family room in the basement. I have not lived in a house with a useable basement since I was in high school. I like to go down there, have a fire in the fireplace, and watch TV or take a nap! (OK, so the sleeping thing is one of my favorite things to do.)
On Saturdays, you like to…
Get up with my son Matthew! Since I don’t get to do it the rest of the week, we let Mommy sleep and I fix breakfast and we will snuggle up and watch some cartoons. If it is the summertime then the pool is involved in the day; otherwise, we normally head out around midday to run errands and grab some dinner out (of course, it must be a place that serves chicken nuggets).
What talent do you wish you had?
I wish I could draw or paint. I can get through a game of Pictionary but that is about it!
What is the best advice you ever received?
Two things:
#1. Pray – I have never utilized the power of prayer until the last few years and it has truly opened up my faith. Our creator has made a way for us to talk to Him and he promises to listen, comfort and respond.
#2. Do something you love. I’m blessed to be able to make my living from doing the things I love to do. However, if you can’t do that, find a way to do it in your spare time and remember #1.
