National Headlines Dolly Is Category Two Hurricane As It Approaches Texas (Miami, FL) -- Fierce winds and heavy rain are hitting the south Texas coast as Hurricane Dolly hits that area today. The National Hurricane Center says the Category Two storm could produce between six and ten inches of rain, with some areas getting deluged with 15 inches in the next few days. The heavy rain is expected to cause widespread flooding across parts of south Texas and northeast Mexico. Hurricane warnings are in effect from Brownsville to Corpus Christi, Texas and along the northeastern Mexico coast from Rio San Fernando north to the U.S. border.
Obama: Nuclear Iran Would Pose "Grave Threat" (Sderot, Israel) -- Barack Obama says a nuclear Iran would pose a "grave threat" to countries around the world, not just the Middle East. The Democratic White House hopeful told reporters in Israel Iran's nuclear activities are of paramount concern for the United States. Obama also said he remains deeply committed to helping Israel achieve a lasting peace with the Palestinians. The Illinois senator said he thinks there is a window of opportunity right now that both sides needs to take advantage of.
GM Falls Behind Toyota In Global Sales (Detroit, MI) -- General Motors says its global sales dropped by five-percent in the second quarter of this year. It says a 20-percent drop in its North American sales led to that result. That means the U.S. auto giant trails Toyota in worldwide sales for the first half of 2008. GM sold roughly four-and-a-half-million vehicles in the first six months of this year, while Toyota sold about four-point-eight-million.
Secretary Of State Upbeat Following North Korea Nukes Meeting (Singapore) -- Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice was optimistic following a six-nation meeting on North Korea's nuclear disarmament. This was the first time Rice had gone to one of the nuclear gatherings with State Department chief negotiator Christopher Hill. He told reporters an agreement on how to verify North Korea's nuclear weapons could be reached by mid-August. On-site nuclear inspections in North Korea, however, could last for months and continue into the next U.S. presidential administration.
Local Headlines Firefighter Injured in Hunt Valley Blaze Recovering (Hunt Valley, MD) -- The Baltimore County firefighter injured while fighting a blaze Monday night at the McCormick & Co. spice mill in Hunt Valley is recovering at Shock Trauma. Christopher Santoro, listed in good condition, may be released today. Officials continue to investigate after the 42-year-old suffered a leg injury when he was hit by a hose that got tangled in the wheels of a fire truck. The fire was the result of dirt and dust igniting in an air handling system.
Charges Dropped Against Harford County Murder Suspect (Bel Air, MD) -- An Abingdon man set to stand trial next week for a New Year's Eve fatal shooting in Edgewood is no longer a suspect. Lewis Cochran, who was being held on murder charges, was released Monday. The 22-year-old was indicted in January for killing Tyree Brown, who police say was shot during a home invasion on Grempler Way. The state's attorney's office decided to dismiss the case against Cochran after reviewing recently returned lab evidence. Authorities continue to investigate, and ask anyone with information to call the sheriff's office.
