"Closer to Your Heart" by Natalie Grant

Erin's Take

There is one line in Natalie Grant's new song, "Closer To Your Heart," that sticks out to me like a neon sign on a dark night: "Afraid of giving up control."

I'm a person who has a lot of things that fall under my control - personally and professionally. If I don't do it, it doesn't get done, and people get let down. Being in control naturally spills over to spiritual things and my relationship with God. I can't tell you how many times I've wrestled with God over things that I felt I had control over, but never did in the first place. I can always tell when I'm trying to be the one in control, when I'm trying to be God, because I don't feel good. I don't feel happy. I feel restless, anxious, and...out of control.

Do you know the feeling? The good news is your feelings aren't crazy. You really ARE out of control, because you weren't even in control to begin with.

Here's what I keep reminding myself when I want to pick up control: never once has God dropped me. Never. He's never set me up for failure. He's always had my best interests at heart. He's never been out of control. Not once. Ever. He's always supported the people who love Him and blessed them HUGELY when they listen and do what He says.

"You are there, but I let go. You're taking this brokenness, making it beautiful."

Give God the pieces that are broken - the pieces you feel like you need to be in control of keeping or putting back together - and let Him make them beautiful so that you can be closer to His heart.

'Closer To Your Heart' Lyrics

Here I am once again,
crying out on the floor.
Trying to make sense
of this emptiness, once more.

I can't do this on my own.
I'm in too deep,
I should have known.
I know You made me for
so much more than this.

I've been running so fast,
trying to get back to the start.
I've been holding so tight,
but it all just comes apart.
Pull me in, break me down,
make me new and bring me

Closer to Your heart, heart, heart, heart, heart [x2]

Help me be unafraid,
find my place where You are.
Oh, You've always been enough,
You're the light in the dark.

Afraid of giving up control,
You are there, but I let go.
You're taking this brokenness,
making it beautiful.

I've been running so fast,
trying to get back to the start.
I've been holding so tight,
but it all just comes apart.
Pull me in, break me down,
make me new and
bring me closer to Your

Heart [x5]

Oh oh, make me come clean.
Oh oh, You're all I need.
Oh oh, bring me closer to
Your heart, heart, heart.
Closer to Your heart, heart, heart, heart, heart.

I've been running so fast,
trying to get back to the start.
I've been holding so tight,
but it all just comes apart.
Pull me in, break me down,
make me new and bring
me closer to Your heart, heart, heart, heart, heart.
Closer to You're heart, heart, heart, heart, heart.
Closer to You're heart, heart, heart, heart.
